We will NOT be holding a separate event for Certamen Qualifiers like previous years. Instead, qualifying Certamen rounds being played on the evening of April 23rd. Three preliminary rounds will be held on Friday, April 23rd from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. Finals will be on Sunday, April 25th from 8:00am - 9:15am. There will be no semifinal rounds; finals will be played by the top 3 scoring teams in each level.
Students and sponsors participating in Competitive Certamen should join the 2021 NCJCL Certamen Remind by texting the message @2021ncj to the phone number 81010.
Open Certamen for all non-competitive Certamen students will be Saturday, April 23rd from 7:00 - 8:30pm.
Competitive Certamen Registration
Each school may register a maximum of 2 teams per level. The levels are: Middle School (all middle school students), Novice (typically Level I), Intermediate (typically Level II), and Advanced (typically Level III+).
Students may play up a level, but never down.
A maximum of 4 players can play every round. However, each team can have 4 players and up to 4 alternates. You may list players as alternates who will not be at the qualifying event, but who may play at state convention. The makeup of teams can change from round to round, but students may not jump between separately registered teams (or levels).
Allparticipants (whether players or alternates) registered must be registered as a member of the NCJCL for the 2020-2021 school year.
Students who are interested in playing Certamen, but are not on the official school teams, may be registered as eligible for a Wild Card team. Wild Card teams will only be assigned if they are necessary, and Wild Card teams are not eligible for advancement into the Final Round. Students who register for Wild Card teams will be part of a pool from which teams will be randomly selected if necessary. Sponsors will be contacted before Friday, April 23rd if students are chosen for a Wild Card team.
Open Certamen will be hosted for all non-competitive Certamen students from all states involved in convention. Students interested in open Certamen should plan to pre-register, and teams will be randomized, much like at Nationals.
